Experience
High Voltage, Pulsed Power Research and Development (20 years)
- Led the
imploding-foil-plasma, SHIVA experiments (U. S. Air Force Weapons
Laboratory).
- Performed exploding-foil,
opening switch experiments (U. S. Air Force Weapons Laboratory).
- Designed and developed the
replacement Marx generator for the HERMES II accelerator (Sandia National
Laboratories).
- Designed and developed a
repetitively pulsed accelerator with a repetition rate of 500 Hz and an
average power of 25 kW (Sandia National Laboratories).
Pulsed Electron-Beam Source Development (16 years)
- A short pulse, high dose-rate
mode on the HERMES II accelerator (Sandia National Laboratories).
- The triaxial diode on the
HydraMITE accelerator (Sandia National Laboratories).
- The pentaxial diode used on the
SPEED accelerator (Sandia National Laboratories). This technology led to
the ring diode, presently used on Saturn, which is the premier X-ray
effects simulator in the world today.
- A long-pulse, repetitive,
thermionic cathode using a PHERMEX diode (Sandia National Laboratories).
- A multimillion shot,
high-repetition-rate, long-lived cathode (Sandia National Laboratories).
Radiation Protection and Radiation Transport (24 years)
- Extensive experience with
radioactive sources and radiation producing machines.
- Wrote a computer code to
calculate radiation produced by an electron beam.
- Designed the radiation
protection enclosures for three, high-average-power, electron-beam
accelerators.
- Completed several courses in
radiation safety, and am familiar with the concept of ALARA (As Low As
Reasonably Achievable).
Experimental Nuclear Physics Research (4 years)
- Measured total, nuclear
reaction cross sections (Northwestern University and Argonne National
Laboratory).
Project Management (25 years)
- Project officer for the
imploding plasma experiments on the 1 MJ SHIVA capacitor bank at the U. S.
Air Force Weapons Laboratory.
- Directed the $0.5 M project
to replace the Marx generator in the HERMES II accelerator at Sandia
National Laboratories.
- Oversaw the final stages of
bringing the REBA accelerator on line at the White Sands Missile Range for
the U. S. Army.
- Acted as my own contractor
for the construction of my house.
- Developed a project plan
for a software company to create a payroll product.
C/C++ Language Programming (10 years)
- Control the Data Acquisition
Instruments, Event Counters, and Delay Generators associated with a
repetitively pulsed experiment. This code analyzes the data in real time
and takes actions to control the experiment, in real time, based on the
results of that analysis. (PC / MS DOS)
- Analyze signal distortion by
a transmission line and correct for that distortion. (PC / MS Windows)
- ASCII communications code
that allows users on two computers to communicate via the serial (RS-232)
port. The users can type simultaneously, and the text is printed on both
computers' monitors. (PC / MS DOS / MS Windows)
- Many codes that analyze and
model experiments. The results are displayed in graphical form on the
monitor or a printer. (PC / MS DOS)
Productivity Software for Personal Computers (17 years)
- Spreadsheets: LOTUS 1-2-3,
MS Excel.
- Word Processors: Microsoft
Word, WordMARC.
- Data Base Managers: Fox Pro,
MS Access, dBASE III Plus.
- Presentation Graphics:
Harvard Graphics, Freelance.
- Project Management: MS
Project, Harvard Total Project Manager.
- CAD: AutoCAD.
- Operating Systems: MS DOS,
MS Windows, MS Windows 95.
Data Base Management Programming (6 years)
- Made major modifications and
upgrades to the accounting package used by an Albuquerque business. This
package runs under Fox Pro on a PC Local Area Network (LAN).
- Used Visual Fox Pro to
create a job estimating application designed for an contractors. This runs
under MS Windows, and it is available for purchase.
- Used MS Access to create an activity
account management system for local high school.
FORTRAN Programming (33 years)
- Predict the behavior of
exploding metal foils (fuses). This code generates a 16 mm color movie
depicting the electrical behavior of the fuse. (Mainframe)
- Calculate the range and
energy loss rate of subatomic particles in matter. (Mainframe)
- Calculate the radiation
shielding required for a high-power, X-ray generator. (PC / MS DOS)
- Many codes that analyze and
model experiments. The results may be displayed in graphical form on a
paper plotter, microfilm plotter, the monitor, or a printer. (Mainframe,
VAX / VMS, PC / MS DOS)
- Many other codes.
(Mainframe, VAX / VMS, PC / MS DOS)
Computer Operating Systems
- Linux/UNIX: Red Hat,
Mandrake, Solaris (1 year, 6 hours college credit)
- Windows NT (2 years)
- Windows 95, 98 (5 years)
- MS DOS (17 years)
- VAX/VMS (10 years)
- Mainframe operating
systems: CDC (Scope, NOS, NOS/BE, etc.), IBM (20 years)
